Fitting in shouldn’t mean losing who you are.
The pressures of school, friendships, family expectations, and figuring out who you are can feel overwhelming sometimes leaving you stressed, misunderstood, or unsure of where to turn.
Finding support gives you a space to talk openly, explore your feelings without judgment, and build the confidence and tools to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and self-understanding.
Counselling in Calgary
Why Teen Counselling?
Being a teen means navigating big emotions, new experiences, and constant change and that can feel overwhelming. Sometimes it’s easier to talk to someone outside the family, and that’s okay.
At McAtee Psychology, we offer a safe, judgment-free space where teens can be themselves. Our therapists understand the many challenges young people face from stress, anxiety, and questions of identity to navigating friendships, school, and neurodivergent experiences.
Counselling helps teens make sense of their thoughts and feelings, develop practical coping tools, and build confidence for what’s ahead. By supporting them now, we help them grow into capable, authentic, and resilient young adults.

Questions Teens Ask About Counselling
What is counselling, and how does it work?
Counselling is like having a safe space where you can chat about anything on your mind. Your therapist is someone who listens without judging and helps you figure out how to handle stuff that’s bothering you. Together, you’ll set some goals and find ways to feel better and deal with challenges. It’s all about giving you the tools to navigate life’s ups and downs.
Will the therapist tell my parents everything I say?
What you talk about in counselling is private, which means the therapist won’t share it with your parents unless you say it’s okay. The only exception is if you’re in danger of hurting yourself or someone else—then the therapist might need to involve others to keep you safe.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s totally okay! You don’t have to come in knowing exactly what to say. The therapist will ask questions and guide the conversation to help you explore what’s going on in your life. You can talk about anything that’s on your mind, even if it feels small.
What if I don’t like my therapist?
It’s important that you feel comfortable with your therapist. If, after a few sessions, you don’t feel like it’s a good fit, that’s okay! You can talk to your parents or the therapist about trying someone else who might be a better match for you.
How long will counselling last?
The length of counselling varies for everyone. Some people might only need a few sessions, while others might come for a longer time. It depends on what you’re working on and how you feel about your progress. You and your therapist will regularly discuss how things are going.
Our Approach
How Teen Counselling Works
Step 1: We Get to Know You
We start by listening; what’s been hard, what’s working, and what you’d like to change. You can share as much or as little as you want.
Step 2: We Create a Plan Together
Your therapist will work with you to set simple, realistic goals such as managing stress, improving communication, or building confidence.
Step 3: We Support You Along the Way
Each session is a space to explore, learn, and practice new ways of handling life’s challenges at your pace, with steady guidance.
