When you or a loved one are navigating life’s challenges, taking the first step to seek professional support is a powerful and courageous decision. However, as you begin looking for help, you will likely encounter a variety of titles: therapist, counsellor, psychotherapist, social worker, and psychologist. It can be confusing to differentiate between these roles, but understanding these distinctions is essential to ensuring you receive the highest standard of clinical care.
At McAtee Psychology in Calgary, we want to bring clarity to your search. This guide will help you understand the differences between various professional designations so you can make an informed choice for your mental health journey.
The General Terms: “Therapist” and “Counsellor”
In the mental health field, some terms are used broadly. Technically, any of our clinicians at McAtee Psychology could be called “counsellors,” and they could all also be called “therapists.” These are overarching terms for professionals who provide talk-focused treatment and a supportive, non-judgmental environment to process your feelings. These terms are not regulated by law, so anyone could call themselves by them, regardless of their level of education.
Here at McAtee Psychology, our practice relies on Registered Psychologists, Provisional Psychologists, and Registered Social Workers to deliver exceptional care.
Defining the Roles: Psychologists, Provisionals, and Social Workers
While our clinicians share the overarching goal of helping you improve your mental health and well-being, their professional designations represent different regulatory pathways and training backgrounds.
1. Registered Psychologist (R.Psych)
In Alberta, the title “Psychologist” is protected by law. To legally use this title, a professional must be fully registered and regulated by the College of Psychologists of Alberta (CAP).
- Training & Education: They must hold at least a Master’s or Doctoral degree in psychology from an approved university program that covers human behaviour, neurobiology, and evidence-based treatment modalities.
- Experience & Exams: They have completed a minimum of 1,600 hours of heavily supervised residency or internship work and passed rigorous examinations, including the North American standard Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) as well as jurisprudence and ethics exams.
- Core Capabilities: They are trained and legally authorized to formally diagnose mental health conditions, such as ADHD, anxiety disorders, major depression, PTSD, and learning disabilities.
2. Provisional Psychologist
A Provisional Psychologist has completed the exact same advanced academic requirements as a Registered Psychologist, holding at least a Master’s or Doctorate degree.
- The Distinction: The “Provisional” status simply means they are currently in the process of completing their 1,600 hours of heavily supervised post-graduate clinical practice and finishing their board examinations (like the EPPP) to become fully registered.
- What This Means for You: They practice under the close supervision and watchful eye of an experienced, fully Registered Psychologist. They bring up-to-date academic knowledge, deep dedication, and highly regulated, safe care to their clients.
3. Registered Social Worker (RSW)
Registered Social Workers are regulated health professionals who help clients navigate emotional difficulties, life transitions, and situational stressors.
- Training & Education: While social workers can enter the field with various levels of education, all RSWs at McAtee Psychology hold advanced Master’s degrees, ensuring a highly sophisticated level of clinical training.
- Core Capabilities: RSWs excel at helping clients process difficult emotions, build practical coping strategies for immediate challenges, and discover actionable tools to improve daily life.
McAtee Psychology’s Shared Scope of Practice
While their regulatory boards are different, the day-to-day clinical experience you receive at McAtee Psychology is seamlessly integrated. Here is how our team operates:
Shared Clinical Scopes
- Comprehensive Care for All Conditions: Unlike standard models, where social workers only handle situational stress and psychologists handle complex mental health disorders, all of McAtee’s clinicians operate in the same scope. Whether you are dealing with everyday burnout and relationship struggles or navigating complex trauma and deep-rooted clinical conditions, our entire team is fully equipped to treat both situational and complex mental health concerns.
- Therapeutic Modalities: All of our clinicians’ counselling scopes of practice are very similar. They all utilize scientifically validated, evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to your unique needs, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR, or psychodynamic therapies.
The Exception: Formal Assessments & Diagnoses
The primary distinction in our practice comes down to psychometric testing and formal clinical diagnoses.
- Who Does Assessments? Only Registered and Provisional Psychologists have the licensing and specialized training required to administer and interpret standardized psychoeducational and psychological assessments, such as evaluations for ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning disabilities, or giftedness.
- Our Team Mix: Not all psychologists conduct formal assessments—but some of ours do. Those who do perform evaluations also provide standard counselling in addition to their assessment work. Contact us for more information!
How to Choose the Right Path for You
Choosing the right professional depends on your current goals:
- If you require diagnostic clarity: If you are seeking to understand you or your child’s unique brain wiring through an ADHD, autism, or psychoeducational assessment, starting with one of our assessing Psychologists is necessary.
- If you are seeking therapy and healing: If you are looking to process trauma, manage burnout, rebuild communication through couples or family therapy, or gain tools to navigate daily stress, any of our registered psychologists, provisional psychologists, or specialized RSWs can guide you. Please reach out to us if you’d like our help matching you with the clinician who’s the best fit for you and your goals.
Insurance and Coverage
Because our clinicians are regulated health professionals, their services are typically covered by most extended health benefits and employee assistance programs (EAP) in Alberta. Many insurance providers have specific categories for “Psychological Services” or “Social Work,” so it is always essential to check your specific policy details.
