McAtee Psychology
Billing and Insurance
Important Note
Individual insurance companies and coverage may vary in the degree to which they cover Psychological Services. It is the responsibility of the client (or legal guardian/parent) to check whether services will be covered by the insurer.
Psychologists in Alberta cannot direct bill the following insurance providers:
CINUP, Cowan Insurance Group, Johnson Inc., Manulife, and Sunlife.

** All Registered Provisional Psychologists are under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist and therefore are covered through all major insurance providers within Alberta. However, they can only direct bill through Alberta Blue Cross**

All of our providers are SunLife Gold Providers which enables you to be reimbursed within 24 hours. Sunlife does not allow for direct billing.

What do your insurance benefits cover?
Plan coverage tends to be broken into two areas Dental Plans, and Extended Health Benefits. Extended Health plans may cover a wide range of items, but are generally designed to offer coverage for services not included in universal health care (e.g. Alberta Health Care).

Psychologists, physiotherapists, massage, podiatrists, osteopaths and optometrists fall under Paramedical Services (Extended Health Care benefits). Paramedical Services on your plan may draw on one pool of money or you may have a pool of money per service. The vast majority of insurance providers cover a portion of both therapy and assessment services provided by a Psychologist.
How about your health spending account?
Some businesses, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOS)/Not-for-Profits, and many government agencies also offer their employees a Health Spending Account (HSA). The idea behind an HSA is to allow employees greater flexibility to choose where they spend their benefits.
Generally HSA funds are easier to access than insurance benefits, and often only require you to submit proof of payment to obtain reimbursement. HSA funds can be used to cover the costs of a Psychologist.
How long does direct billing work?
We can directly bill your health insurance company for the total session or a portion of the session fee. The percentage of your session that is covered is dependent on your health insurance company and your plan. You will be responsible for the portion of your session uncovered by your health insurance plan.
