Full or Partial Coverage
Almost all Extended Health Care Plans cover all or a portion of the costs for a psychologist under "psychologist services", "psychotherapy", or "counselling". Contact your insurance agent for more information on reimbursement procedures and coverage information.
Direct Billing can be performed for a number of companies. Direct billing is where the Psychologist will bill your insurance company and you will only be responsible to pay for your portion of the session cost. Click here to see if yours can be directly billed.
More Information about Costs of Psychological Services
Do you have insurance benefits?
The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association estimates that 67% of Canadians have extended health care benefits through their workplace, privately held insurance, or through a government support program.
What do your insurance benefits cover?
Plan coverage tends to be broken into two areas Dental Plans, and Extended Health Benefits. Extended Health plans may cover a wide range of items, but are generally designed to offer coverage for services not included in universal health care (e.g. Alberta Health Care).
Psychologists, physiotherapists, massage, podiatrists, osteopaths and optometrists fall under Paramedical Services (Extended Health Care benefits). Paramedical Services on your plan may draw on one pool of money or you may have a pool of money per service. The vast majority of insurance providers cover a portion of both therapy and assessment services provided by a Psychologist.
How about your health spending account?
Some businesses, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOS)/Not-for-Profits, and many government agencies also offer their employees a Health Spending Account (HSA). The idea behind an HSA is to allow employees greater flexibility to choose where they spend their benefits.
Generally HSA funds are easier to access than insurance benefits, and often only require you to submit proof of payment to obtain reimbursement. HSA funds can be used to cover the costs of a Psychologist.
How long does direct billing work?
I can directly bill your health insurance company for the total session or a portion of the session fee. The percentage of your session that is covered is dependent on your health insurance company and your plan. You will be responsible for the portion of your session uncovered by your health insurance plan.
I can direct bill the majority of insurance providers. Click here for a list.
Psychologists in Alberta cannot direct bill the following insurance providers: CINUP, Cowan Insurance Group, Johnson Inc., Manulife, and Sunlife.
How to set up Direct Billing?
Setting up direct billing is easy at McAtee Psychology. I only require your name (first and last) as known by your insurer, carrier (Green Shield, Alberta Blue Cross, Canada Life, etc.), and plan member ID.
